Dave Brown
Dave Brown was artistic director of Adelaide-based Patch Theatre Company for 20 years before embarking in 2015 on a 10 year proof of concept venture called The PaperBoats, which is building a philosophy and practice of cumulative theatre-making around 7 creative principles.
The PaperBoats is an international partnership platform for theatre-makers who are pioneering new ways of CONNECTING and CREATING around the devising of “extraordinary” performances for 3-7 year olds.
The PaperBoats is now 2 years old and the platform is co-creating 4 new works for children involving artistic communities in Australia, USA, New Zealand and Singapore.
Especially on Birthdays is the first of these works to emerge from the platform and the show will continue to be developed, trialled and refined across 2018 in Australia with and in Singapore – with a US cast production of the work being developed for 2019.
Especially on Birthdays is an intimate, non-verbal, visual theatre work for 4-8 year olds about a pair of twins of differing temperaments and a 6th birthday that one of the twins doesn’t want to have. At its heart it expresses how, despite our differences, in the push and pull of our human transactions, we manage to survive each other and get by.
